Written word, as one of the most important pillars of civilization, simultaniously represents a sort of mirror of a nation. This cultural mirror reflects the people it belongs to and their written word - their faith, traditions, practices.

On the individual level, when we talk about culture and its subgroups (literature, film, music, theater, television, sport ...) and the layers (subculture, post culture, elitist, populist, sports, culture ...), we can discern a picture of our profession as well. It reflects the range of all our achievements, ups and downs.

The written word of our profession is the mirror in which one can see many years of the labor of many generations and enthusiasts, as well as the development and aspirations that we expect in the near and distant future. All this together - our past and present and the future, represents our profession, and all of us within it. In this area a written word, our professional word, has an immeasurable significance.

Therefore, we are going, in this short introductory text, to encompass the work of FIEP Europe - Section for the history of physical education and sport.

One of the fruits of the work of this section is the journal Physical education and sport through the centuries . Now in the second year of its operation, it slowly finds its place in the versatile family of the journals in the area of physical education and sport. We hope that the effort of the editorial board is going to be recognized and that through the written word we will show a nice picture in the cultural-sports mirror .

The proliferation of the associates whose scientific papers are drawing our picture is an encouraging indicator that gives hope - that we are on the right track. But the way ahead is a long one and we are making all efforts to pass our relay baton, which we are lovingly holding, to those to come – in its most beautiful and cleanest form. We want it to last for many years.

Starting from this number, we intend to do several things in order to bring the magazine to as many readers:
  • We will begin to periodically publish the texts of the authors in other languages as well. We will do this not only because of the linguistic richness of our profession, but also to help the authors who are not able to provide good Тranslations of their texts into English;
  • Some larger volume papers which deserve to be published, we will publish in two parts. This applies particularly to the papers of the theoretical and philosophical character.
  • Starting from this number, we have a new co-publisher of our Journal. It is the Faculty of Sport and Physical Education in Leposavic, University of Pristina.
  • Our Journal will soon be available worldwide through a network of Open Access. This is yet another opportunity for our written word to be spread and accessible worldwide and thus, to have its value checked.
Another important activity of the FIEP Europe ‐ Section for the history of physical education and sport is focused on collecting historical material about the development of the physical education and certain individual and collective sports. It is a demanding and extensive work, but we hope that we will succeed. Our hope is not unfounded, because the first book in this research range is already finished. The book on the History of Physical Education in Europe is published and delivered to the judgment of our experts. Twenty eminent authors, whose papers dealt with physical education in their respective countries, are a guarantee that there will be no negative criticism. The next book on the History of basketball is being prepared for 2016.

Other activities are directed towards organizing professional meetings and conferences to speak about various problems within our profession. Numerous published Proceedings from these meetings and conferences witness their high level of quality. All the information on these conferences and other activities and plans can be found on our website.

In all our activities we try to provide our written word to always bear in mind that the focus of our profession is man – a personality , one, unique and unrepeatable. And by not descending below the threshold of the scientific honesty, to build a nice cultural image of our profession - physical education, that is, physical education and sport.
